COLD HARDY PLANTS
Growers and Breeders of Unusual Cold Hardy Plants
 

Orostachys iwarenge 

Quantity of plants tested: 5
Size of plant tested: small seedlings which were fully rooted.
Soil texture: sandy loam with peastone cover and others with mulch covering.
When planted: the plants were planted in the ground in June 2001.
Winter protection: a poly roof covered one plant from late fall to early spring the other 4 had no protection..
Microclimate: the 1 plant was in a warm microclimate, approximately 4 feet off a south facing wall.  The other 4 were in an average to warm microclimate about 7 feet off a east facing wall.
Temperature: refer to 2000-2003 winters on this chart
Findings: the plant which was kept dry seems fully hardy here.  The others did not return.

orostachys_iwarenge_2001_nov7.jpg (44321 bytes) November 7, 2001 - This photo shows one of the plants when flowering in late fall.  The plant is fully hardy here if kept on the dry side.  Unprotected ones did not survive.
