Quantity of plants tested: 1
Size of plant tested: single pad placed in the ground in June 1999.
Soil texture: sandy loam covered with yellowish stone.
When planted: the plant was planted in the ground in June 1999 as an unrooted cutting.
Winter protection: the plant was protected with a plastic tarp the first winter, but no protection there after.
Microclimate: warm microclimate, approximately 3 feet off a south facing wall.
Temperature: refer to 1999-2001 winters on this chart
Findings: the plant has received no damage to date, but has not grown either.  It is still a single pad.
opuntia_phaecantha_camanchica.jpg (21379 bytes) February 24, 2000 - This photo shows the plant as of February 24, 2000.  It received no damage this past winter and the low temperature was -2F.  One day had a high of only 12F.
