Opuntia humifusa 

Quantity of plants tested: several pads
Size of plant tested: single pads placed in the ground in April 2001 and September 2001.
Soil texture: sandy loam covered with yellow river stone and some areas with no cover.
When planted: the plants were planted in the ground in April 2001 and in September 2001.
Winter protection: no protection.
Microclimate: warm and cold microclimates, approximately 1 feet off a south facing wall and also in a mostly shaded winter position.
Temperature: refer to 2001-2002 winters on this chart
Findings: the plant has performed well in Connecticut over the several years, this is our first winter with it.
June 23, 2001 - This photo shows the color of the flowers.  The pads flowered only two months after placing into the ground.  This cactus does not have any spines.
