COLD HARDY PLANTS
Growers and Breeders of Unusual Cold Hardy Plants

Euryops tysonii

Quantity of plants tested: 4 plants
Size of plant tested: plants are 2yr old
Soil texture: sandy loam and covered with 2" pine bark mulch.
When planted: the plants were planted in the ground in June 2002.
Winter protection: None.
Microclimate: warm microclimate, located about 1 feet off an east facing wall.
Temperature: refer to 2002-2003 winters on this chart
Findings: the plants were toasted after the 2002-2003 winter.  They seemed to hold up well to upper single digit temps during the first few occasions, but didn't like the lower single digit temps and cold highs too well.  They slowly turned all brown by mid to late January or so.
euryops_tysonii_2002_sept7.jpg (73902 bytes) September 7, 2002 - This photo shows the plants in early September 2002 prior to any freezes.
euryops_tysonii_2002_dec15r.jpg (72609 bytes) December 15, 2002 - here's the plant after the first real cold spell.  Low temperatures at this location were probably 8F or so.  We recorded 2.5F in our cold spot.  It's been buried in snow for many days already and we had several days which only got into the low 20'sF during sunlight hours.
euryops_tysonii_2003_jan11r.jpg (73980 bytes) January 11, 2003 - here's same plants a few weeks later.  The low to date still has been about 5F in this microclimate but this temp has occurred several times.  We'll see if it can re-grow in spring.
euyrops_tysonii_2003_mar8r.jpg (75505 bytes) March 3, 2003 - here's same plant in early March.  Can you say toasted!  We will have to see if it can resprout or grow back from the roots.

It never re-grew from the roots....it's officially dead.
