Eucalyptus gunnii "blue ice" 

Quantity of plants tested: 38
Size of plant tested: 1st year seedlings which were 4" to 2' tall by November 2000.
Soil texture: sandy loam and covered with 2" pine bark mulch.
When planted: the seedling were planted in the ground in July 2000.
Winter protection: None.
Microclimate: 32 were planted in an average microclimate, and 6 were planted in a cold microclimate.
Temperature: refer to 2000-2001 winter on this chart
Findings: all the plants died, none resprouted from the roots.

eucalyptus_gunnii_blueic_2000_nov23.jpg (12122 bytes) November 23, 2000 - This photo shows damage to the smaller branches after nights down to 19F. Some damage was already observed after a 25F night.  We expected much more from this one.
eucalyptus_gunnii_blueice_2000_dec2.jpg (27006 bytes) December 2, 2000 - This photo shows (look close) damage to the smallest leaves on December 2, 2000 after nights down to 12F, 12F, and 14F.  Damage is pretty bad already when compared to some other species.  Juvenile leaves started to burn after 25F, while the mature leaves burned after a 19F night.
