Delosperma sp. "mat forming"

Quantity of plants tested: 3 plants
Size of plant tested: good sized seedlings
Soil texture: planted in a loamy sand covered with granite peastone.
When planted: the plant was planted in the ground in July 2001.
Winter protection: plastic roof covered 2 plants the entire winter, sides were open.  The other plant was planted in a cold microclimate with no protection.
Microclimate: 2 were planted in a warm microclimate, approximately 3-4 feet off a south facing wall.  The other was planted in a cold microclimate with no protection.
Temperature: refer to 2001-2002 winter on this chart
Findings: the plants did fine with no damage at both locations.  Low temp was 1.6F.
delosperma_sp_matform_2001_sept27.jpg (45766 bytes) September 27, 2001 - The plant is an extremely fast grower.  It's a great ground cover.  Seed was started in May 2001.
delosperma_sp_matform_2002_apr18.jpg (30090 bytes) April 18, 2002 - the color of the flower is somewhat unusual since in inner flower petals are white while the outer petals are purple.  The flowers tend to start off more white and gradually change to more purple with age.
