of plants tested: 6 Size of plant tested: 1st year seedlings which were started from seed in May 2000. Soil texture: sandy loam covered with peastone granite. When planted: the plants were planted in the ground in June 2000. Winter protection: none Microclimate: warm microclimate, approximately 4 feet off a south facing wall. Temperature: refer to 2000-2001 winter on this chart Findings: four plants died, and the other two plants suffered major burn and rot, but survived and quickly grew into a nice looking specimen plant by June and even flowered off and on from May through September. |

November 20, 2000 - here's the plant as of December 23, 2000. The plant is pushing up it's first flower of the season. Low temperature so far was 25F. No damage has been observed to date. |

December 2, 2000 - here's the status as of December 2, 2000. We have observed some minor damage so far. The low temperatures have been 12F, 12F,and 14F. No damage at all was observed after the first night down to 19F. |

December 23, 2000 - this photo shows the plant a few weeks later on December 23, 2000. The low temperature so far without snow cover has been 5F. The plant is showing more signs of failure, but still looks alive. |

December 29, 2000 - this photo shows the plant as of December 29, 2000. The low temperature so far has still been 5F (without snow cover). December 25 was a cold day with highs only in the teens. It was quite apparent that the last few days has really hit this plant hard. |

February 4, 2001 - this photo shows the plant as of February 4, 2001. The plant was snow covered from December 30 through January 8 and from January 21 through January 25. The low temperature so far has still been 5F (without snow cover). It's looking very bad now, will it survive?? |

Mid May 2001 - here's the status of the plants as of Mid May 2001. Notice how the leaves turned green and it's already flowering. |

August 14, 2001 - here's the plant as of August 14, 2001. As you can see, it is doing very well with much new growth. The flowers are small 1/2" to 3/4" diameter yellow flowers which open just past noon and close up at night. Notice the two different sizes in leaf length. The plant on the left has small leaves while the plant on the right has much larger leaves. |
