Soil texture: sandy loam and covered with 2" pine bark mulch.
When planted: the plants were planted in the ground in June 2002.
Winter protection: None.
Microclimate: warm to moderate microclimate, located about 1 foot and 7 feet off an east facing wall.
Temperature: refer to 2002-2003 winters on this chart

aucuba_japonica_2003_mar8r.jpg (65507 bytes) March 8, 2003 - here's same plant in early March.  It has some damage, but considering it was the first year in the ground and was not established, it did OK.
