Anthocephalus cadamba 

Quantity of plants tested: 2 plants the 99-00 winter, and 1 plant the 00-01 winter
Size of plant tested: 12" tall seedlings the 99-00 winter, 4ft tall plant the 00-01 winter.  All started from seed in March 1999.
Soil texture: sandy loam and covered with 2" pine bark mulch.
When planted: the plants were in 4" pots the 99-00 winter, the other plant was planted in the ground in April 2000.
Winter protection: None.
Microclimate: the 4" pots were against a south facing wall, the other 4ft plant was planted on the west side of a building approximately 2ft from the wall.
Temperature: refer to 1999-2001 winters on this chart
Findings: the tree seemed to receive damage when temperatures dropped below 30F.  Totally dead after a 25F night.

anthocephalus_cadamba-2.jpg (61453 bytes) November 19, 2000 - This photo shows the tree on November 19, 2000 after two nights down to 28F.  Notice the leaves furthest away from the wall received the most damage.  The immediate area against the wall was probably 1 or 2F warmer.
