of plants tested: 1 Size of plant tested: moderate sized plant, 6" pot size. Soil texture: sandy loam When planted: the plant was planted in soil in May 2002. Winter protection: it was under a plastic tarp from December -March. Microclimate: warm microclimate, about 3 ft from south facing wall. Temperature: refer to 2002-2003 winter on this chart Findings: the plant nearly died. Many leaves pulled in the spring. The plant appeared fine until it warmed up a bit in late March to early April. It was very cold this winter, our town had 50 days with highs 32F or lower and 2 days with the high temp of 12F. |

October 22, 2002 - This photo shows the plant prior to the winter. This plant was sent from a friend (Steve!) in Las Cruces, NM back in the fall of 2001. It was containerized that fall and was actually kept outside in it's pot for most of the winter and did fine. |

April 13, 2003 - This photo shows the same plant in mid April. It's not doing too well now. It looked fine until late March when some browning was starting to take place. |

19, 2003 - This photo shows the same plant about 1 week later. I
was cleaning the garden (pulling the leaves off this plant with little
force) until the last, center spear didn't pull any longer. IT
LIVED???? Only time will tell. It's April 29 today and the spear
still didn't pull.
It died a couple weeks later. |
